Rs. 2 lakh collected from public for the poor family

ALAPPUZHA: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala will hand over Rs. 2 lakh collected from the public by the United Democratic Front Pandalam constituency committee to the mother of Prasannan of Nooranad, who died in judicial custody at Mavelikkara sub-jail recently, at a function at Nooranad on Monday.

District Congress Committee president C.R. Jayaprakash said at a press conference here on Friday that the State Government had not paid compensation to the poor family. No investigation on the death had started.

Mr. Jayaprakash said the 100-day rule of the Left Democratic Front Government was a failure. The mafia and spirit smugglers were having a free run in the district, he said.

According to him, thefts and robberies have become common, especially in Mavelikkara and Haripad. He said the police had not been able to arrest criminals and people were feeling insecure.

He alleged that the Students' Federation of India had unleashed violence in the district on the issue of the Kerala professional colleges Act, but the police were unwilling to control the violence.

He alleged that the agricultural labourers' union of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) had destroyed crops in 50 cents of land of a farmer, Bhaskara Kurup, at Vettikkode, near Kayamkulam.

Mr. Jayaprakash said the people who lost their houses in the recent monsoon calamities had not received any compensation. The Government had limited compensation to only a few crops.

While the authorities prepared a list of people below the poverty line in the district, a large number of eligible persons were removed out of political considerations, he added.
