New guidelines on nutrition, hydration

BANGALORE: The Sports Authority of India (SAI), along with scientists from the National Institute of Nutrition and the International Life Science Institute, has prepared broad guidelines on nutrition and hydration for excellence in sports performances.

The core group recommended that sportspersons need to be divided into six groups for preparing the menu so as to provide the required macro and micro-nutrients in accordance with the calorie requirements and body weight of the concerned sportspersons.

The group also suggested a periodical nutritional assessment over seven days, regular monitoring of micro-nutrient assessment, setting up of a Nutritional Cell at NIS, Patiala, education of athletes and coaches on nutrition, setting up separate mess for core group of sports, displaying the calorie value of each dish, giving specialised training for cooks and finally, orientation courses for coaches and sportspersons before leaving for international competitions. — Principal Correspondent
