MAIS bags a treble

BANGALORE: The host, Mallya Aditi International School won both the boys' and girls' titles in basketball and football title in the girls' section at the MAIS inter-school sports meet which concluded at school campus here on Saturday.

MAIS defeated National Public School, Rajaji Nagar 25-24 in the girls' basketball final while in the boys' section, MAIS beat Clarence HS 24-16. Nityn and Vedike, both of MAIS were adjudged as best players of the tournament in the boys' and girls' sections respectively.

In the football final for girls, MAIS prevailed over Bethnay HS 1-0 vie tie-breaker. After goalless full-time, Zia of MAIS scored the match winner.

St. Joseph's Boys High school foiled a clean sweep by MAIS when it won the boys' football title. In the final, SJBHS beat MAIS 2-1. Naveen and Owesie scored for SJBHS, while Maitreya reduced the margin for MAIS.

Naveen of SJBHS (boys) and Zia of MAIS (girls) were named the best players of the tournament.

Gokul, Namratha to lead

Gokul Ramesh and Namratha will lead Karnataka boys' and girls' teams respectively in the 33rd National sub-junior basketball championship which gets underway at Kolkata from August 28.

The teams:

Boys: Gokul Ramesh (capt), Michael John, Praful Maka, Hridya Thakkar, Kishore Kumar, Shreyas, V. Vinay, Toufik Aralikatti, Vijay, Preran Poonacha and M. Nagendra.

Girls: Namratha Rao (capt), Ssagarika, Iravathi Guha, Roshini Rosa John, Mythili Anekar, V.L. Sushmitha, Sanjana Suresh, Sanjana S., Sushma Shinde, P. Moulya, V.A. Shruthi and S. Beryl Priya.

Officials: Satynarayana (coach) and Ms. Jayawanthi Shyam (manager).

KOA to honour awardees

The Karnataka Olympic Association will felicitate Khel Ratna Award winner, Pankaj Advani, Arjuna award winners Aparna Popat, Shikha Tandon, besides Dhyanchand award winner, Uday K. Prabhuand Dronacharya award winner, Capt. Venu at a function at its premises in Sree Kanteeava Stadium complex on Saturday.

Barring Pankaj Advani, who is playing in the World team snooker championship at San Jose, and the boxing coach, Capt.Venu, who is away in Colombo for the SAF Games, others are expected to attend the function.

Basketball meet

The State Basketball Association will conduct `C' division championship for men at Sree Kanteerva Stadium courts from September.11 to 18. The tournament which is being played for Rangarajan memorial Trophy, has attracted 35 entries, according to KSBA.
