BANGALORE: "Indian bowlers are like unpolished gems," the Karnataka State Tenpin Bowling Association (KSTBA)-appointed Malaysian coach, Jimmy Lee, said. The KSTBA has veered from the ordinary on its own to develop and popularise the sport by bringing in foreign coaches periodically. Jimmy (54), a former International All Star Open champion, was thrice voted Malaysian Bowler of the Year and was chosen the AMF Sportsman of the Year two times. Besides, he also won the World Cup bronze at France, six gold medals in three SEA Games, two golds in three World team cup tournaments, a Commonwealth Games gold in Scotland and a bronze at the Hiroshima Asian Games. Jimmy has been coaching the Karnataka bowling team for the past two months. "There is immense talent in India, particularly in Bangalore and Mumbai. With more exposure and competitive play, India can be a contender for the Asian and World titles soon," felt Jimmy. "I'm contracted with the Malaysian Bowling Congress and how much ever I wish to come back... it will not be possible. But in the past seven-plus weeks, I've imparted all that I have learnt in my career. With adequate support from the Sports Ministry and the respective State Governments, this game will make it big in the near future," Jimmy said. The KSTBA will host the National championship at the Amoeba Bowling Centre, here, from September 4 to 10 and Jimmy is confident that at least three or four players from this team to will make it to the top six. The Indian team for the Doha Asian Games will be selected on the basis of the performance in the national.
