Siddarth Jain moves up

Dindigul: Top seed Siddarth Jain of Chennai moved in to the men's singles quarterfinals of the Tamil Nadu Senior State badminton championship organised by Dindigul District Badminton Association, defeating M. Manoj of Dindigul 21-8, 21-10 here on Friday.

Punjab beats KSEB

At Nagercoil, Punjab beat Kerala State Electricity Board Thiruvanathapuram 54-40 in the men's four-team B-zone league and qualified for the semifinals of the second annual IOB Bharat Rathina Rajeev Gandhi All India basketball tournament organised by Kanya Kumari District Basket ball Association at Anna Stadium, Nagercoil on Thursday night. KSEB also qualified for the semifinals.

The results: Men: Punjab 54 (Jaydeep Singh 21), bt KSEB Thiruvananthapuram 40 (Manoj 17).

Women (Super-league): Central Railway, Mumbai 56 (Manisha 14, Indu 10) bt Western Railway, Mumbai 52 (Rashni 14, Lincy 19).

Southern Railway 60 (Meenulatha 21, Shamilee 11) bt South East Central Railway Bilaspur 49 (Bincy Philip 13, Seema 10).

Tamil Nadu triumphs

At Madurai Tamil Nadu Clinched the title in the Employees Provident Fond Organisation South Zone football tournament defeating Andhra 3-0 in the last match of the four-team league at Madura College ground at Madurai on Friday.

Tamil Nadu emerged winner with an all-win record (9pts) and Karnataka (6Pts) finished runner up losing only to Tamil Nadu.

Mr. B.S.V. Sharma, Regional Provident Fond Commission, Madurai gave away the prizes.

The results: Tamil Nadu 3 (Vedamanickam 2, Muthuram 1) bt Andhra 0; Karnataka 1 (Johi) drew with Andhra 1 (Siddique); Karnataka 3 (Muralidhar, Ramesh 2) bt Andhra 0.

Chirsthu wins title

At Tirunelveli, Chirsthu Higher Secondary School lifted the Bells Trophy toppling the defending champion, St. Mary's HSS, Dindigul 3-0 in the final of the ninth State-level inter-school hockey tournament organised by Hockey well wishers Association at Anna Stadium, Palayamkottai on Thursday.

Vinoth Kumar (11th minute), R. Sathyaraja (29th) and M. Karthikeyan (64th) scored.

Sri Meenakshi on a roll

At Madurai, Sri Meenakshi Government College for women retained the Valayapathi Pichaiveeran Pon Thai Memorial Trophy for the sixth successive year defeating Yadava College 58-42 in the final of the Madurai Kamaraj University inter-collegiate women's Kabaddi tournament at the University ground here on Friday.

The results (semifinals): Yadava College bt Lady Doak College 87-38; Sri Meenakshi Govt. College for women bt Fatima College 60-25.

Quarter-finals: Yadava College bt Sermathai Vasan Women's College 44-4; LDC bt Arulanadar College, Karumatur 62-31; Sri Meenakshi College bt Madura College 61-15; Fatima College bt EMG Yadava Women's College 50-27.

Indrajith to lead

B. Indrajith will lead Combined Districts against City in the match to be held at the Jaya Engineering College in Chennai from August 26 to 28.
