JAIPUR: For the first time after the widespread havoc wrought by incessant rain in parts of Rajasthan during the past one week, the State Government on Friday put the casualties at 85. The border district of Barmer accounted for as many as 50 deaths. The number of casualties, however, is much below unofficial estimates. Relief Minister K.L. Meena, who returned here after an aerial survey of the affected areas in Barmer with Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, said 5,809 villages in 12 districts were under water. While Barmer accounted for 50 deaths, the adjoining Pali district had 10 casualties. The number of deaths reported from other districts are: Banswara 2, Chittorgarh 3, Dungarpur 2, Jhalawar 4, Jalore 1, Rajsamand 4, Sirohi 3 and Udaipur 6. Giving the initial assessment of the damages, Dr.Meena said standing crops over an area of 17.35 lakh hectares, worth Rs.722.21 crores, have been damaged. Over 5,400 temporary and 2,390 pucca houses were damaged in the rain and the floods, he informed. Ms.Raje in a statement here said the State would extend all possible help to the flood-affected persons and sought liberal Central assistance for their rehabilitation.
