Chandigarh: Widespread rains on Friday drenched most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh providing relief from humid conditions to the people in the region even as a breach of 15 feet occurred in western Yamuna canal in Karnal district in Haryana. The waters submerged about 7,000 acres of agricultural land, a report from Karnal quoting officials said. Discharge of water had been stopped from Tajewala Headworks in Yamuna Nagar district in the wake of the breach, executive engineer G.R. Goyat said adding that at least 125 employees of the irrigation department were working to plug it. Rainfall recorded at Chandigarh was 28 mm, Ambala 13.6 mm, Panchkula 5 mm, Kalka 30 mm, Morni 7 mm, Ludhiana 33.2 mm, Patiala 28 mm, Nangal Dam 27.5 mm and Balachaur 4.1 mm. Fourteen districts in Madhya Pradesh's eastern and northern parts have received less than average rainfall but the situation has improved in the past two days. The Met department forecast rain to continue. Jabalpur and Rewa divisions would receive showers. Panna received maximum rainfall at 10 cm overnight, while rainfall in Katni was (7), Lanji (5), Khajuraho (5), Shahdol (5), Jabalpur (4), Baihar (4), Varaseoni (3) and Chhatarpur (3). Moderate rain also lashed parts of Himachal Pradesh, triggering fresh landslides. Beas, Sutlej and the Ravi and their tributaries were swollen. Una was the wettest in the State, recording 55.8 mm rain till this morning, followed by Dharamsala 44.6 mm, Barthin 32.5 mm and Sundernagar 20.9 mm.Shimla recorded 1.5 mm rain till this morning.
