NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday said her Government would ensure that all children live in an unpolluted environment and attend school up to 14 years of age.

Inaugurating the Childscapes Project at Vasant Vihar here, Ms. Dikshit said the Government was committed to ensuring effective protection against child labour and exploitation. "It is unfortunate that a large number of children work as domestic servants, in dhabas and other occupations. Many are migrants with or without their families, often forcibly brought to Delhi. Most of them are at the mercy of their employers."

Water theft from

Sonia Vihar plant

NEW DELHI: In the first case of water theft after the start of the ambitious Sonia Vihar treatment plant recently, the Delhi Jal Board has detected two unauthorised diversions from the main distribution line from the plant at Khizrabad and Ashok Park. It has also initiated disciplinary action against two of its employees, including a junior engineer, for failing to check the theft.

A theft detection squad noticed these illegal diversions from the direct line on Tuesday. It immediately disconnected the illegal connections and initiated disciplinary action against junior engineer Mahesh Sharma and fitter Suraj Bhan for failing to protect the distribution system. They were also transferred to non-sensitive posts. The Jal Board has also filed a case with the police and alerted its staff to remain extra vigilant.

Appealing to the people not to indulge in unauthorised diversions and help the water utility in safeguarding the system, a senior Jal Board official said unauthorised direct taping from main distribution system is a serious offence. "It also destroys the hydraulics of the system resulting in imbalance in supply of water," he added.
