Severe pollution at three traffic junctions

Staff Reporter

Kilpauk, Thyagaraya Nagar and Vallalar Nagar named by pollution board

Chennai : The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has identified three traffic intersections in the city that face severe air pollution.

Data collected from Kilpauk, Thyagaraya Nagar and Vallalar Nagar traffic intersections from August 21 - 24 showed that the total suspended particulate matter (TSPM) levels in air was well above the permissible limits. TSPM is one of the criteria to monitor air quality.

Acceptable level

While the acceptable TSPM level is 200 microgram per cubic meter, the traffic intersections in Kilpauk and Vallalar Nagar showed 291 units and T. Nagar 215 units.

The respirable dust particulate matter (RSPM) level, another indicator of air pollution, exceeded permissible limits in Kilpauk and Vallalar Nagar intersections. The acceptable limit of RSPM is 100 microgram per cubic meter, but both junctions recorded 103 units. The findings are from the Chennai ambient air quality monitoring programme by TNPCB.
