CHENNAI : With `Navarathri' coming up, Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan has organised a dolls exhibition at its Anna Salai showroom.

The expo, inaugurated on Friday by the State Minister for Khadi, K. Ramachandran, features dolls and images, priced between Rs. 10 and Rs. 15,000. It is open till October 2.

Inaugurating the sale (worth Rs. 25,000 bought by Prasanna Venkatesh, Managing Trustee of Srila Sri Mounaguru Swamigal Jeeva Samadhi Ashram of Thangal in Vellore District, Mr. Ramachandran said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi realised the need for strengthening Khadi. The main aim of the exhibition was to provide employment and see that artisans making dolls received an income on a par with other industries.

C.P. Singh, Secretary, Handlooms, Handicrafts and Textiles, said after assessing the demand among the public, the Government plans to have a combined exhibition in places such as Kolkata or Mumbai next year.

M. Raghunathan, secretary of Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan said that no longer do the artisans need to take dolls to every home for sale. Exhibitions now had given them a place for selling; and buyers a chance to pick up the dolls at a fair price. Last year the sales was Rs. 50 lakh and this year, the target was Rs. 60 lakh. Similar exhibitions were planned in Madipakkam and Nanganallur.

Television personality Revathy Sankaran said besides just selling them, the salespersons should also provide details about the ways to keep the navaratri kolu and the philosophy behind the placement of dolls on different rows. Vijayam Sathishkumar, Assistant Director of Commission for Khadi and Village Industries, Chennai, V. Suryaprakasam, Chairman, Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan, also spoke.
