MTC begins probe in Kolathur bus fire

Inquiry reports under study; mechanic suspended pending result of investigation

CHENNAI : The MTC authorities have started an inquiry into the accident at Kolathur on Thursday night when one of its fleet buses was gutted in a fire.

Apart from the crew, the authorities conducted enquiries with a woman selling tender coconuts and owner of a petty shop nearby. But, so far they have not been able to find out the reason behind the fire.

Preliminary investigations revealed that there was no leakage of diesel from the bus' fuel tank. The authorities using lights walked for a distance to check if there was any oil leak. But nothing was found, they said.

Similarly, they also ruled out the possibility of any electrical short-circuit.

Recapping the incident, officials said the bus (route number 114) was stopped near Retteri junction after developing a technical snag. All the passengers were asked to get down from the vehicle and a mechanic from the rescue vehicle came to the spot. He opened the fuel tank to check whether there was any block in the tube pumping oil into the engine.

Suddenly the tank exploded and the oil spilled over on to the front and rear tyres.

The tyre caught fire, which spread to other parts of the vehicle. The fire then spread to the seat cushions and the body of the vehicle. Luckily, as there was no fuel supply to the engine, there was not much damage to it. Only the parts around the engine were gutted, the officials said.

The mechanic had been placed under suspension pending the enquiry. Both the Regional Manager and Branch Manager of Madhavaram, where the vehicle belonged to, had submitted their inquiry reports, they added.
