Water release from Kandaleru stepped up

Staff Reporter

Poondi reservoir has received 150 mcft in the last week, say officials "Increased inflow will be advantageous for speedy realisation of water"

CHENNAI : Poondi reservoir, a key storage point for Chennai's water supply, is receiving a steady inflow of water from the Kandaleru reservoir from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

The Poondi reservoir realised about 150 million cubic feet of water (mcft) in the past one week from the neighbouring state, the city's water managers say. The water received from Andhra Pradesh since last Saturday would add a week's supply for the city at an average of 640 million litres a day. The water that flowed into zero point (inter state border) at Uthukottai reached a height of 1.4 m of its total height of 2.7 m on Friday. Andhra Pradesh has stepped up the release from Kandaleru reservoir since Thursday, after conducting a drive to check for illegal tapping from and seepage of the canal. The zero point at Uthukottai recorded an inflow of about 400 cusecs on Friday evening and the transfer rate to Poondi was about 380 cusecs. Andhra Pradesh officials have assured their counterparts in Tamil Nadu of increasing the water release in a phased manner. At present, about 1,100 cusecs were released from Kandaleru, an official said.

The officials here expect to realise about 8 thousand million cubic feet during the next four months. Moreover, the Somasila reservoir, which is upstream of Kandaleru, is releasing about 780 cusecs. The initial inflow would reach Kandaleru in one or two days. The increased inflow into the reservoir, which supplied water to the city, would be advantageous for speedy realisation of water in Tamil Nadu limit, the official added.

As Andhra Pradesh recorded heavy showers, both Srisailam and Somasila reservoirs had good storage. Meanwhile, the outflow from Poondi reservoir has been stopped to shore up the storage there. The storage at Poondi reservoir was 385 mcft.
