Thanjavur: The newly laid broad gauge line between Thanjavur and Needamangalam in the Thanjavur-Tiruvarur section "is fit for operating trains," said the Commissioner for Railway Safety (CRS), P.K. Sen. Mr. Sen conducted a speed trial run in a special train from Tiruvarur to Thanjavur to find out the suitability of the new line for operating passenger trains. The special train, which started from Tiruvarur at 9.20 a.m. arrived at Thanjavur at 10 a.m. On his arrival at Thanjavur, Mr. Sen told presspersons on Friday, "I am opening the stretch between Thanjavur to Needamangalam. A bridge beyond Needamangalam on Tiruvarur side is yet to be completed. Only when it is completed fully and after conducting another trial from Needamangalam to Tiruvarur, that stretch will be opened."
Passengers' appeal
Passengers of Thanjavur and Tiruvarur have appealed to the Railway authorities to expedite the works in the Needamangalam-Tiruvarur section and get the CRS certification quickly and operate passenger trains from Thanjavur to Tiruvarur. The gauge conversion work between Thanjavur and Tiruvarur began on July 1, 2004. The work on the 55-km stretch was carried out at a cost of Rs.30 crore.
