MADURAI: The image of the village postman is all set to change. From a bicycle, he will graduate to a moped. Apart from delivering letters and money orders, he will also be selling loan products. And get a commission for each sale. This will be the impact of `Postman Akshaya,' a scheme launched by the Department of Posts (DoP) in association with the TVS Finance and Services. Under the marketing tie-up, launched by the Chief Post Master General, Radhika Doraiswamy, here on Friday, postmen in semi-urban and rural areas will sell loan products for the purchase of TVS two-wheelers, branded consumer goods, computers and diesel generator sets. They will help customers to fill up applications and hand them over to a collection centre. The postmen will also take them to the dealer points for sanction of loan and delivery of goods. Ms. Radhika described the new venture as mutually beneficial. It would mean "business for TVS Finance and commission for us." The President of TVS Finance, V. Ramesh, said the loan products would be available at zero per cent interest for select branded consumer goods. The DoP would get a commission for each product sold and the postman a commission, ranging from Rs.50 to Rs.300. The company will train rural postmen in handling its products and the cheques for payment will be handled by local post offices. The scheme will be launched in Tirunelveli next month and extended to other districts in six months.
