NEW DELHI: An Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) here on Friday issued a non-bailable arrest warrant (NBW) against Chandigarh-based doctor J.S. Bedi who had allegedly issued a fake medical certificate to Vikas Gill, one of the accused in the Jessica Lal murder case. Gill had allegedly used the certificate to get exemption from personal appearance in the court trial of the case. ACMM Kamini Lau issued the arrest warrant on an application by the Delhi police, who police submitted that the accused had been avoiding his appearance before them for interrogation in connection with the case. Ms. Lau directed the police to arrest Dr. Bedi and produce him before the court by September 8. On a Delhi High Court direction, the Delhi police registered the case against the doctor in April this year. The High Court has already rejected Dr. Bedi's anticipatory bail applications twice. The alleged culpability of the doctor had come to light when the Delhi police submitted in the High Court that Vikas Gill, who was tried and acquitted along with eight other accused in the case in February this year, had left the country without permission of the court during the trial and has been absconding since. `Vikas Gill had left the country on October 9, 2004, without the permission of the trial court when the trial proceedings were pending. Though his presence in the court was recorded on February 21 this year when the trial court pronounced the judgment in the case, he was not physically present in the courtroom," the Standing Counsel for the Delhi police, Mukta Gupta, had stated in the High Court.
