Three held for snatchings

NEW DELHI: Three persons allegedly involved in several cases of mobile phone and chain snatching have been arrested by the South Delhi police. The police claim to have recovered a motorcycle, a scooter, some stolen chains and cellular phones, besides narcotic substances at the instance of the accused.

A joint team of the Special Staff of the South Delhi police and Hauz Khas police arrested two of the accused, Shah Nawaz and Mohammad Faim, at Mehrauli and the third, Danish, at Malviya Nagar in South Delhi during separate raids on Thursday.

The police said the accused, along with their accomplices, would gather at a pre-decided point near a busy market place before proceeding on a chain and mobile phone snatching spree. They used three motorcycles, with two riders each, to commit the crimes. While the first "party" would inform about any possible risks, the second would commit the snatching. The task of the gang members riding the third motorcycle was to divert the attention of the victim by ostensibly offering to help them.

Usually, the gang members would casually ask for mobile phones from passers-by on some pretext and then flee with them. Most of the gang members used to wear red T-shirt as they considered it lucky. Also, they never returned home without snatching phones and chains worth at least Rs. 5,000, the police said. They added that they were expert motorcycle riders adept at negotiating busy streets at high speed.

According to the police, the gang members also had a good network of receivers of stolen properties. While two of them were in Gaffar Market of Karol Bagh, another was based in Bhajanpura.

The keynote presentation on "Disability and Employment Policy in India" was made by Fordham University Assistant Professor Sophie Mitra, who stressed the need for a national campaign to gather comprehensive data on disability.
