BANGALORE: An alleged assault on Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Maruti Manpade by activists of the Dalit, Hindulidavara, Alpasankyathara Samithi (DHAS) triggered violent incidents at Doddaballapur, Yelahanka and Cantonment railway stations on Friday. The police said Mr. Manpade was travelling to Bangalore from Gulbarga by Udyan Express. In the early hours of Friday, around 80 DHAS activists boarded the train at Mantralayam.
Argument
They apparently got into an argument with Mr. Manpade over sharing seats and allegedly assaulted him. Mr. Manpade reportedly phoned CPI(M) workers in Bangalore and informed them of the incident, the police said. As the news spread, CPI(M) workers gathered at Doddaballapur, Yelahanka and Cantonment railway stations, along the train's route to Bangalore. At the three stations the CPI(M) workers and the DHAS activists came to blows. Three persons were injured in the clashes, the police said. Later, CPI(M) and DHAS leaders decided to settle the matter amicably, and no complaint was made to the police, a senior police official said. The arrival of Udyan Express at the city railway station was delayed following the unruly incidents.
