Steps on to reduce landline rental

`BSNL awaits word from Telecom department'

ERODE: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has initiated steps to bring down the bi-monthly rental on landline phones, said the General Manager, BSNL, Erode, V. Sundar.

Mr Sundar told reporters on Saturday that an announcement in this regard was expected from the department of telecommunications soon.

Fault rate

Telephone fault rate in the district stands at three per cent and efforts are on to bring it further down. The Erode Telephone Exchange was designed to handle three lakh telephone lines, and now there were 1,81,489 working connections. There was no proposal to open more exchanges, he added.

Stating that there were 7,965 Wireless in Local Loop (WLL) connections in the district, Mr. Sundar said recently WLL exchanges were commissioned in Bhavanisagar, Eranahalli, Punjai Puliampatty and Sivagiri.

The connections were given on demand, and many who surrendered their landline phones went in for WLL connection.

Cellular phone connections were also being provided on demand he said and added that prepaid connections in the district were 77,829 and postpaid 23,026.

As many as 200 towers for cellular connections would come up in the district, taking the total to 318. Online counters of BSNL functioned at Erode BSNL general manager's office, Telephone Bhavan, Narayanavalasu, Marapalam, Bhavani, Gobichettipalayam, Dharapuram, Kangeyam, Kodumudi, Moolanure, Sathyamangalam, Anthiyur, Chennimalai and Vellakoil, where subscribers could remit their bills or apply for landline, WLL and cellular phone connection.

There were 1,265 broadband connections in 15 places together, and the service began in Gobichettipalayam, Vellakoil and Narayanavalasu recently. The One India plan gathered momentum in the district, he said.
