Relief operations: district administration lauded

    GULBARGA: The manner in which the district administration handled one of the worst floods in Gulbarga district has helped reduce loss of human life and livestock.

    The district administration convened an emergency meeting of the District Disaster Management Committee to take stock of the flood situation and take precautionary measures in all 49 villages on the banks of the Bhima by opening 19 relief camps on July 30.

    Deputy Commissioner Pankajkumar Pandey and Superintendent of Police Manish Kharbikar led the officials in addressing the problems faced by flood-affected people.

    The fact that not a single village affected by the floods has reported a case an epidemic after the floodwaters receded proves that the efforts of the health department officials were not in vain. More than 25 relief centres were set up for 12,000 people from 56 villages on the banks of the Bhima and four relief centres were set up in villages on the banks of the Krishna.

    The Central study team that toured some of the affected villages in the district lauded the district administration for the way it handled relief operations. More than 17 villages were marooned and road links to another 26 were disrupted owing to the floodwaters.

    However, farmers suffered losses with standing crops on more than 22,628 hectares (estimate at Rs. 58.03 crore) being damaged.

    The floods claimed four lives and 22 cattle head.
