Conventional sources are limited, must be utilised judiciously, say experts

BIJAPUR: President of the Zilla Panchayat Arjun Rathod on Saturday emphasised on the need to develop and popularise alternative sources of energy.

Inaugurating the Rajeev Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas programme here, Mr. Rathod expressed concern over the country running out of energy sources.

Conventional sources were limited and it was important to utilise these in a judicious manner. Research activities aimed at evolving renewable energy sources must be encouraged, he added.

Though he became Prime Minister at a young age Rajeev Gandhi had a vision for the country. He was aware that the country was bound to feel the acute shortage of energy and had initiated several steps to save fuel and popularise non-conventional sources of energy, Mr. Rathod said. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin underlined the importance of solar energy and explained the measures initiated by the district administration to create awareness on it. Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Panchayat Rajeev Ranjan, who flagged off an awareness jatha, said solar energy was the key for the future, and an efficient way to tap this abundant source needed to be evolved.

District Coordinator of Nehru Yuva Kendra, D. Dayanand welcomed the gathering.

District Officer of Directorate of Field Publicity Shivayogi Mestri conducted the programme. Prizes were given away to students of various competitions.

The event was organised by the district administration, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Directorate of Field Publicity, Karnataka Women's University, Bijapur, Renewable Energy Development Corporation and Union Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy.
