GULBARGA: Minister for Science and Technology and Planning Ramachandra Gowda on Saturday said the State Government would recommend to the National Council for Science and Technology Museums to upgrade the District Science Centre in Gulbarga city into a Regional Science Centre to cater to the needs of the people in the region.

Interacting with scientists and members of the advisory board of the District Science Centre during a visit to the centre, Mr. Gowda said the State Government would ensure that the centre was upgraded into a Regional Science Centre and had proper facilities as required by the National Council for Science and Technology Museums.

Referring to another demand made by the scientists for an additional van for the centre to enable schoolchildren from rural areas to visit the centre, the Minister said he would request legislators of the region to sanction Rs. 1 lakh each from the legislators' fund for a vehicle.

Mr. Gowda said Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy had promised to provide more funds for science and technology activities in the State.

Director of the Visveswaraya Science and Technology Museum K. Vasudev Bhat told the Minister that the National Science and Technology Museum had taken up a project to set up a video conferencing hub at its headquarters in Kolkatta at a cost of Rs. 1.6 crore. This would enable the four centres and four mobile vans of the centres in different parts of the country to access all programmes aired through this video conferencing hub.

Mr. Bhat urged the Minister to allot the land available near the centre for the expansion of the centre. Member of the Karnataka Vigynana Parishat and medical teacher P.S. Shankar urged the Minister to upgrade the centre into a Regional Science Centre.

B.K. Chalageri said the Minister should work towards getting ten acres of land in the city for the centre to set up a science park. The Minister, who went around the centre, evinced interest in the science exhibits put up at the centre. District Science Officer Vishwanath welcomed the gathering.
