SHIMOGA: The high-level committee of the State Environment Department has cancelled the proposed mining at Hogarekanugiri in Kadur taluk of Chikmagalur district, according to the Vriksha Laksha Andolana (VLA), an environmental organisation of the Western Ghat region. A VLA spokesperson said in a press release that the State Environment Department authorities had informed its convenor Ananth Hegde Ashishar that the proposal for the mining had been cancelled. Mr. Hegde, in a letter to the Director of the State Environment Department, had complained about the "illegal" mining at Hogarekanugiri. He said that the Commissioner of the State Environment Department had also informed separately the VLA that the mining activities at Hogarekanugiri had been stopped. Mr. Hegde had been informed that the a team of officials of the Department would visit Hogarekanugiri soon to examine the matter, the press release said and added that the Deputy Commissioner of Chikmagalur had recommended to the Department of Environment that the permission for mining at Hogarekanugiri should not be granted. He said the volunteers of the VLA in association with the other environmental organisations of the Western Ghats region were agitating for a year demanding that mining should not be allowed at Hogarekanugiri.
