Pondicherry: The executive committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Pondicherry has called upon the administration to sanction adequate funds for the civic bodies. A resolution adopted at its meeting held here recently said that the civic polls were held after a gap of 38 years in the Union Territory and as many as 1,138 representatives at the municipal, commune and village panchayats levels were elected. Elected civic bodies, however, lacked powers and finances to deal with the demands for more amenities. A release from the party's secretary V. Perumal said here on Saturday that the meeting urged the Government to make available at least fifty per cent of the total funds needed for development of civic amenities. The meeting also appealed to the Government to bring in amendments to the Pondicherry Municipalities, Commune and Village Panchayats Acts 1973 to ensure that the municipal bodies had full powers to carry out developmental works as envisaged in the schedules of the Constitution. The powers now entrusted with 30 legislators should be devolved among the representatives in the civic bodies. They should be given special training. The developmental plans evolved by the Centre and State Governments should be implemented through the local bodies, another resolution stated.
