Reconciliation meet in Iraq

BAGHDAD: Iraqi tribal leaders on Saturday inaugurated their first conference in Baghdad with more than 500 chiefs debating issues of sovereignty, the role of militias and the Ba'ath party's uprooting.

Late in June, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki had unveiled a plan for national reconciliation but left several controversial points unsolved.

``What we need today is that no Iraqi to be out of the workshop of rebuilding a new Iraq,'' Mr. Maliki told the televised conference in his speech.

"However, this doesn't mean that we won't have disputes, but we hold talks,'' Mr. Maliki said.

``Iraq's liberation from any kind of foreign influence will not be achieved unless we achieve the national unity to block the path in front of whoever wants to incite sectarian strife among us,'' Mr. Maliki said. — Xinhua
