`Ask Maharashtra to pay compensation'

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The Institute of Parliamentary Affairs (IPA), Bangalore, has urged the Union Ministry of Water Resources to direct the Maharashtra Government to pay compensation to Karnataka, which has suffered heavy losses on account of release of water from reservoirs in that state.

In a letter to Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz, institute secretary M.C. Shanthamurthy said people living in the Krishna basin of the State suffered heavy losses following unscheduled and irregular releases of water from reservoirs in Maharashtra. Himanshu Thakkar of the South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers and People had stated that bad management of water release from dams resulted floods in the State and other parts of the country, Prof. Shanthamurthy noted.

The institute has suggested to the Ministry to set up a National River Authority for regulating water flows into and out of reservoirs.
