BANGALORE: The Congress has refuted the charge levelled by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy that a party convention being organised here on September 3 is meant to destabilise the Government. The coalition government would fall on its own because of dissension, senior party leader and former Minister R.V. Deshpande told presspersons here on Friday. The Congress convention was meant to strengthen the secular forces in the State and make people aware of the level of corruption in the Government. Congress president Sonia Gandhi will attend the convention at which the All-India Progressive Janata Dal will formally merge with the party. The Congress expects over five lakh people to attend the convention, which will be held at the Palace Grounds here. Mr. Deshpande said that BJP leaders, who spoke against corruption, had rushed to New Delhi to urge the party's central leaders to expel the suspended MLC, G. Janardhan Reddy, from the party. Mr. Reddy had exposed corruption in the Government, he claimed. Asked about illegal mining in the State, Mr. Deshpande said the Government had no clear mining policy. The mining sector had contributed several crores in revenue to the State exchequer, he said and opposed the Government's proposed move to ban mining. V.S. Ugrappa, MLC and KPCC spokesperson, was present.
