Staff Reporter
GUNTUR: The State police have the upper hand in the Nallamala region though it is a difficult and vast terrain, but Maoists have adopted the strategy of attacking soft targets in eastern delta regions, Director-General of Police Swaranjit Sen has said. At the inaugural of the 49th State Shooting Championships at Undavalli firing range near Mangalagiri in Guntur district on Saturday, Mr. Sen said killing of a Congress leader was the handiwork of `Maoist Cobra' in Guthikonda village on Friday. Maoists tried to malign the police force by terming some groups as pro-police and `cobras,' but this time it looks like they did not have reason to kill innocent people. The police were gradually upgrading their strength by arming men with arms, but could not do it everywhere as Government priorities had to be kept in mind. "They are attacking people and police at places least expected, which would be difficult for the police to guess in advance," he observed. Maoists do not become heroes by killing innocents and living in forests. They have better life out in society, they can enjoy this lifestyle by joining the mainstream, he added. Maoists would be taught lesson by people as they were losing support base in the rural and tribal areas also, Mr. Sen opined.
