Anantapur
Staff Reporter
ANANTAPUR: Commissioner of Rural Development and State Programme Coordinator of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) N. Narasinga Rao has asked the non-Government organisations to conduct social audit of the scheme transparently with the help of people, workers and elected representatives. Speaking at an awareness programme for MPDOs, special officers, programme officers, DWMA officials and representatives of NGOs on the proposed social audit of NREGS from September 1 here on Saturday, he said shortcomings found in its implementation would help the Government implement the scheme in the right spirit.
Audit mandatory
He said that Anantapur was first in the implementation of NREGS not only in the State but also in the country. Social audit was a must as per Section 17 of the NREG Act. Social audit would be an effort to know field-level problems in the implementation, problems of labourers, quality of works, payment of wages, attendance register and measurement of works, Mr. Rao explained. A report would be prepared based on the findings and sent to the Central Government. The Rural Development Commissioner directed the district officials to create awareness among people, labourers, elected representatives and media. He also instructed the MPDOs to divulge work-wise information in detail to volunteers conducting the social audit. Any misleading information would defeat the purpose of social audit itself, he said. The audit reports would be discussed in gram sabhas later.
Minor problems
District Collector and district coordinator of NREGS Dasari Kadmiel said there were some minor problems here and there in the implementation of the scheme, irrespective of the fact that it was being implemented successfully. Joint Commissioner of Rural Development Kishan Das, DWMA Project Director E.N. Srinivasulu, IKP Project Director N. Ramachandra Reddy, Zilla Parishad chief K. Sripathi Rao and others also participated.
