Staff Reporter
KURNOOL: The steps taken by the Congress Government have failed to infuse confidence in farming community, as there is no let up in the spate of suicides in the State, especially in Rayalaseema, according to K. Ramakrishna, president of Andhra Pradesh Raithu Sangham. Talking to reporters here on Saturday, Mr. Ramakrishna said in the past few weeks four farmers died in Chittoor, nine in Anantapur and several in Kurnool. The failure of crops this year once again triggered suicides among farmers. He said Rayalaseema district had been reeling under the worst drought in the last 30 years. The condition was equally bad in Kurnool, Kadapa and Chitoor districts.
Neglected problems
Mr. Ramakrishna regretted that the drought problem did not figure in the Assembly. About one crore people were hit by drought but the House disrupted frequently on Telangana issue. He urged the Government to provide 25 kg rice to every family in the drought-affected areas and Rs. 2,000 per acre for crop loss. Also, he wanted the Government to waive loans. Raithu Sangham would hold demonstrations at the Mandal Revenue Offices on September 1 and Collectorates on September 14 to highlight the problem of drought.
