Bribery charges: CBI inquiry sought

Staff Correspondent

`There is no reason to disbelieve evidence'

Claims
  • Evidence throws light on assets of Chief Minister's family
  • Congress rally aimed at stabilising the party

BELLARY: H.K. Patil, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, said Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy had no moral right to continue in power.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, he said, "In the wake of the corruption charges levelled against him by suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Janardhan Reddy, Mr. Kumaraswamy had no moral right to continue as the Chief Minister."

Mr. Patil said he had gone through the documents released by Mr. Reddy in support of his charge, and added that he had no reason to disbelieve Mr. Reddy or the documents made available by him. According to him, the disclosure of documents by Mr. Reddy had thrown light on the assets acquired by the Chief Minister's family members. The onus of giving a proper reply with regard to the crores of rupees deposited in the bank and the assets lay with the Chief Minister, he added. Mr. Patil criticised Mr. Kumaraswamy for trying to give the impression that he was not corrupt through his statements on the floor of the House. Demanding an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the charges of corruption, Mr. Patil said that Congress would continue its fight and would not allow the Government to continue. He said his party would prevail upon the Governor to take steps to oust the Government. Mr. Patil was of the opinion that the coalition Government had a bad beginning and was started without any principle and ideology.

He said the September 3rd rally, in which All India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi would be participating, was to organise and stabilise the party and was not aimed at ousting the coalition Government. V.R. Sudarshan, K.S.L. Swamy, MLCs; T.B. Jayachandra, Koujalagi, M. Diwakar Babu, former Ministers; M. Shankar Reddy and Shiraj Sheikh, former legislators; were present.
