Bangalore: A State-level Consultative Meet on Child Trafficking here on Friday focussed on the need for better implementation of laws to curb using children for labour, begging and other purposes. The meet was organised by the Campaign Against Child Trafficking, Karnataka, and was inaugurated by Muni Reddy, Deputy Director, Department of Woman and Children Development. The meet reflected upon the fact that innumerable children were being trafficked for labour, domestic work, organ transplants, begging, drug peddling, marriage, adoption, for performing in circus and several other forms of entertainment.
Lack of employment
Disintegration of the rural communities and the grim reality of the poor and the marginal people, lack of employment opportunities for adults, low social status of the girl child, a general lack of education and awareness make people easy victims of trafficking, the participants said. The day-long session also included paper presentations and panel discussion on forced labour, begging, adoption, marriage, law on child trafficking and law on education.
