Collector plea to Wakf Board

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: District Collector Navin Mittal on Saturday sought the cooperation of office-bearers of the Wakf Board and representatives of the Muslim community in widening the Eluru Road, particularly where a Muslim burial ground and some Wakf properties were situated.

At a meeting attended by them and officials of the VGTM-Urban Development Authority (VGTM-UDA), Mr. Mittal said the widening of the third stretch of Eluru Road would commence on September 1.

He said while it was important to respect the sentiments of every community, it was also imperative to take up road widening in the larger public good. Of the total 210 property owners on the third stretch of the Eluru Road from Padavalarevu to Ramavarappadu, 190 had already given their consent.

Protecting properties

On the issue of protecting the Wakf properties on Eluru Road, Mr. Mittal said the district administration would take into consideration the directions of the High Court, even while studying the rulings given by the lower courts.

UDA vice-chairman Y.S. Prasad said 12 feet each on both sides of Eluru Road was required for widening it. If any religious property came in the way, the UDA was prepared to relax the width up to a foot.

Stating that the UDA had encountered a problem from a Hindu temple also but told them that the issue was beyond any particular religion.

Representatives of the Muslim community told the meeting that they were ready to cooperate with officials about the burial ground but three different committees were involved in the issue.

The officials should talk to these committees too.

Mr. Mittal asked the UDA officials to discuss the issue with the members of these committees.
