`Vanitha Karshaka Mela' begins

GOOD WORK: Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan having a look at farm products produced by women, at the `Vanitha Karshaka Mela' in Kollam on Monday.

KOLLAM: The `Vanitha Karshaka Mela' organised here on Monday by the Agriculture Department was an occasion that amply reflected the potential of women in agriculture sector.

The `mela' had forty stalls. Farm products grown by women farmers were on display.

The mela was inaugurated by Minister for Agriculture Mullakkara Ratnakaran at a function presided over by Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan.

The products on show comprised vegetables grown on terraces and backyard farms to those grown on large farms by `vanitha sangams.'

When products came under a single roof, it resembled a major wholesale vegetable market.

Brisk sales

The `nadan' vegetables, with women power behind it, were on high demand. Sales were brisk and by evening most stalls were empty. The customers could choose from hot `kanthari' chillies to the cool elephant's foot (`chena') and that too at prices much cheaper than at regular vegetable markets.

In fact the `mela' made its contribution to keeping the vegetable prices in the city under check.

The prize for the best stall went to the `Edamullakkal Karshaka Vanitha Sangam.'
