CHENNAI:
Construction workers have resented the non-implementation of welfare measures, such as ESI and PF, even 11 years after a separate board was constituted for them.
Members of the Nirman Mazdoor Panchayat Sangam staged a dharna here on Monday demanding implementation of their demands, which included an increase in building levy from .3 per cent to two per cent; early disposal of applications for deaths in accident; marriage assistance pending since 2005; and disbursal of relief to those who were handicapped in construction accidents since 2000.
In a release, T.M. Chandran, deputy secretary, wanted the Government to hike the monthly pension to Rs. 1,000 and fix the eligibility at 55 years.
He said registration and renewal of memberships, as also application for benefits, should be done through trade unions.
Children of construction labourers must get education assistance from Standard I till higher education.
The Sangam wanted the Government to give four units of sand for each lorry instead of the present two.
