Waive interest on loans of goldsmiths: MLA

MANGALORE: Suratkal MLA Krishna J. Palemar has urged the Chief Minister to waive interest on loans obtained by artisans, especially goldsmiths.

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and released to the media here, the MLA said many artisans; particularly goldsmiths in Dakshina Kannada district had taken loans from various financials institutions including banks and South Kanara Goldsmith Cooperative Society to manage their business. However, owing to lack of adequate work, most goldsmiths were finding it difficult to earn a decent livelihood.

Loan repayment

They were not even in a position to repay interest on loans obtained, he said and urged the Chief Minister to announce waiver of interest on lines with similar concessions shown to farmers, fishermen and weavers.

The Chief Minister has taken cognisance of his appeal and directed the Principal Secretary, Department of Cooperation, to take steps to mitigate sufferings of the goldsmiths, he said.
