AWARD PRESENTED: T. N. Seshan, former Chief Election Commissioner (second from left), presenting an award to Akkamma Krishnamurthy, president, Andhra Mahila Sabha, in Chennai on Monday.
CHENNAI : Former Chief Election Commissioner T.N.Seshan on Monday lamented that societal values are on the decline. Giving away prizes and trophies to meritorious institutions and individuals on the occasion of the 52nd anniversary celebrations of The Mylapore Academy, he said tolerance was declining in society. The country, which once stood as an example for understanding, harmony and unity among the people to the other nations, was not so now. Pointing out to the alleged killing of a college professor in Ujjain a couple of days ago, he said one hand organisations such as the academy did their best for society, on the other the situation was such that it raised doubts whether people had lost humaneness. V.Sundaram, a former IAS officer, said the organisation had done outstanding work in the last five decadesR.Rajagopalan, former Tamil Nadu Director-General of Police, complimented the academy for dedicating itself to a good cause. Abraham Jacob, Chief Operations Manager, Southern Railway, thanked the academy for honouring the best railway guard, driver and stationmaster also. Sarojini Varadappan, academy chairperson, released the souvenir.
