VISAKHAPATNAM: Union Minister of State for Mines T. Subbirami Reddy announced an additional grant of Rs.40 lakhs from his MPLADS fund for construction of a new degree-cum-post-graduate block at the Visakha Government Degree College for Women here on Monday.

This amount is in addition to his earlier release of Rs.20 lakhs for the block. Moved by the plight of the students studying in makeshift sheds Mr. Reddy announced the additional grant after laying the foundation stone for the new building.

    Assurance

Speaking to the gathering comprising students and college staff after the stone-laying ceremony he assured them that within a short period there would be no sheds and the college would be on par with any of the corporate colleges in the district. "This assurance has been given by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajsekhara Reddy himself a few months ago," he informed the gathering.

Earlier, Visakha- II MLA S. Ranga Raju, who actually initiated the renovation programme a year and a half ago, said the new block would be built over 11,300 sft. combining ground plus two floors. "The block will contain nine class rooms and library and will be built at a cost of Rs.72 lakhs," he said.

VUDA Vice-Chairman G. Venkatram Reddy said the college would also have a well landscaped open place with facility for a couple of outdoor games like volleyball and handball. He urged the NSS and Red Cross units of the college to come forward and maintain the ground.

While the construction part is being taken care of by VUDA, the landscaping is being done by the District Forest Department.

Principal of the college B.V. Apala Naidu, Pendurthy MLA T. Gurumurthy Reddy, VUDA Chairman P.S.N. Raju, and PCC General Secretary Y. Maria Das also spoke.
