Sikhs take out procession in city

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The International Sikh Forum, Karnataka, took out a procession on Monday from Anil Kumble Circle on Mahatma Gandhi Road to the Raj Bhavan, deploring the recent incident in Jaipur where the hair of a Sikh youth was forcibly cut off.

A memorandum was submitted to Governor T.N. Chaturvedi about the need to discourage such tendencies. The memorandum pointed out that unshorn hair was a part of Sikh identity and part of the community's faith. Sikhs had contributed to the country's development in all fields; they were active in the freedom movement and were employed in large numbers in the armed forces and many of them had sacrificed their lives in wars for the nation.

Leader of the Sikh Forum Baljeet Singh said, "During the Mughal rule, Sikh gurus prevented the forcible mass conversion of many Hindus and it is unfortunate that now acts hurting our religious rights and sentiments are being perpetrated by some elements.''
