16 persons arrested in the case

NEW DELHI: At least 10 policemen, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police, were injured in heavy stone-throwing by residents of Gokalpuri in North-East Delhi on Monday when a BSES power distribution company team accompanied by some Central Industrial Security Force personnel went there to conduct raids to unearth illegal power connections. The police have arrested 16 people.

The incident took place in the afternoon when the BSES team went to the Gokalpuri area to conduct raids. An altercation broke out and two residents were allegedly roughed up. Soon other residents gheraoed the BSES team.

Subsequently the police were called in, at which the residents began hurling stones at them. Ten policemen, including ACP Seemapuri sub-division Bhag Singh, sustained injuries. The police had to resort to tear-gassing the mob. The situation was brought under control within an hour. "The Seemapuri ACP has sustained a head injury," said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East Delhi) Rajiv Ranjan.

A case of riot, obstructing public servants from carrying out their duty and assaulting them has been registered at the Gokalpuri police station.
