THALASSERY: It is going to be a dream come true for cricket lovers of this town, which has a legacy in the game that no other municipal area in the State can match. A modern, exclusive cricket stadium to be developed at Conorvayal here is a long-cherished dream of people here, for whom no game is as popular as cricket. The two-century-old cricket tradition of the town will be highlighted at a function in which Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan lays the foundation stone for the stadium with all required facilities on Thursday. Cricket in this town has remained a common man's passion since being introduced here by the British over 200 years ago. ``Once the stadium is developed, Thalassery can again play host to national and international level matches,'' says Kannur District Cricket Association secretary P.V. Sirajuddin. For the last six years, the town could not host any national-level matches because the existing municipal ground fell short of the stipulated requirements laid by the BCCI, he adds. The Kerala Cricket Association has sanctioned Rs. 50 lakh for the construction of the stadium. Mr. Balakrishnan has set apart Rs. 25 lakh from his MLA's fund for the construction of a pavilion for the stadium being built by the association and the municipality.
