dated August 30, 1956: National Volunteer Force

The Lok Sabha on August 28 passed the Lok Sahayak Sena Bill unanimously. The Bill was originally called the National Volunteer Force Bill and the long title was amended during the second reading. It seeks to constitute a National Volunteer Force for imparting military training to men between the ages of 18 and 40. The Defence Minister, Dr. K.N.Katju, said it was the Government intention to give military training to one lakh people every year in camps of one month's duration distributed throughout the country. In five years' time they would have trained five lakh people. He assured the House that the military officers engaged in training would be made aware of the fact that they were training civilians and should handle them with care. Dr. Katju said the organisation to which the Bill sought to give a legal basis had been operating for nearly 18 months. It had made a great appeal to the people in the country. The urge among them for elementary military training was a desirable one.
