Aswin Jayaram ambushes Abhijeet, shares lead

NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu lad Aswin Jayaram turned down a draw-offer and went on to pull the rug from under the feet of overnight leader Abhijeet Gupta during a sensational ninth and penultimate round of the Parsvnath National junior chess championship here on Tuesday.

With Aswin joining Abhijeet in the lead at 7.5 points and four other players trailing by half a point, the battles for the two qualifying spots for this season's National `A' championship promise a lot on Wednesday.

The Bapu Samaj Sewa Kendra witnessed some violent battles on the leading boards with the top seed Abhijeet finding little solace in the fact that second seed G. Rohit and third seed D. Harika also ended up on the losing side.

Among the girls, Soumya Swaminathan defeated Lakshmi Sahiti to share the lead with Mary Ann Gomes and Padmini Rout at 6.5 points from eight rounds.
