CHENNAI: The Life Help Centre for the Handicapped, a voluntary association, was started in 1977 when there was not much awareness about rehabilitation for the mentally and physically challenged. At their recent completion of 29 years of service, the organisation thanked the sponsors Welt Hunger Hilfe and AWO International for their support during a musical evening at the Le Meridian Hotel on Sunday. Today, the establishment has come a long way and has three centres in Chennai, Cuddalore and Kashmir. The Eva Integrated School for physically disabled children and the Navapraja School in Chennai for mentally challenged young people with an Early Intervention department are among the different facilities the organisation offers to integrate such people to mainstream life. The Eva Integrated School encourages children from economically weaker sections whose families cannot look after them due to financial constraints. Inaugurated in 1987, the Pre-Vocational Centre imparts training to intellectually disabled adolescents in simple trades like envelope making, horticulture and screen-printing. Residential facilities are also provided with dormitories for physically challenged children and cottages for the mentally disabled.
