MYSORE: The Dasara Wrestling competitions will be going national from this edition. For, more than a thousand wrestlers, including nationally and internationally known wrestlers, would be competing for the famed Dasara Kesari, Dasara Kumar and Dasara Kanteerava. Minister for Housing D.T. Jayakumar told presspersons here on Tuesday that the competitions, which were hitherto confined to Karnataka, would be made a national event by inviting wrestlers from Punjab, Haryana and Maharashtra. The seven-day event would be inaugurated on September 23 at the D. Devaraja Urs multi-purpose sports arena, he added. Though the Dasara Committee had not decided on who would be inaugurating the competitions, he said they had started inviting acclaimed wrestlers to boost the image of the event. This would also popularise the Dasara events in those States, he added. Besides, Mr. Jayakumar said wrestling competition for women had been organised as part of Dasara competitions. A new state-of-the art weighing machine would be introduced in this Dasara event to prevent any confusion over the weight of the wrestlers, he said. Mr. Jayakumar said a Karate championship would be introduced for the first time during Dasara festivities. The three-day event commencing on September 23 would feature over 2,000 sportspersons. MLC Arun Machaiah was coordinating the event, he said. "A new concept called `Welcome Homestay' is being introduced where outstation Karate sportspersons will be staying with the local sportspersons. Two persons will be staying in each house, which will help in building a bond with local sportspersons," he said.
