Girl restored to parents

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The Two-Town police on Tuesday rescued a minor girl from a private hostel in Guntur and handed her over to her parents.

G. Velangini, 17, of Singhnagar area went missing on August 18 and her grandfather Venkataiah lodged a complaint with the Payakapuram police the same day.

The police suspected the involvement of N. Narendra Kumar, 25, a sales representative and a tenant of Velangini's house and kept a watch on his movements.

The police charged Narendra with luring Velangini into a trap and taking her away from her family. Velangini was married to her paternal uncle two months ago and the marriage was against her wish. As Narendra knew that the girl was planning to come out of the marriage, he used the opportunity, the police said. The police found that the girl was admitted to a hostel in Guntur on August 20, two days after she went missing from the city.

The police said though they tried to take Narendra into custody the next day itself, he filed a petition in the High Court seeking protection. He approached the High Court afresh on Tuesday and lodged a complaint that the police tried to detain him illegally.
