Victory for project-affected people

Special Correspondent

GULBARGA: The people of submerged villages of major and medium irrigation projects in Gulbarga district scored a major victory with the Government succumbing to their pressure and ordering the officials of the Irrigation Department and the Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Ltd. (KNNL) to take up a fresh survey of all villages submerged or slated for submergence in the backwaters of irrigation projects.

The officials have been asked to prepare fresh estimates for the sanction of additional house sites and upgrading the existing rehabilitation centres.

A decision to this effect was taken at the District-level Rehabilitation Committee meeting chaired by Agriculture Marketing Minister Sharanabasappa Darshanapur and Animal Husbandry Minister Revu Naik.

Mr. Darshanapur told the officials that there were complaints of haphazard survey and there was a demand for more house sites in the villages affected by the Bennethora Major Irrigation Project, Amarja Medium Irrigation Project and Gandorinala Medium Irrigation Project.

He directed the officials to take up a fresh survey and send a proposal to the Government to redesign the rehabilitation package by including more number of house sites.

He said the survey conducted 10 years ago to shift these villagers to rehabilitation centres and the decision to allot house sites were not suited to the present times.

The officials involved in the rehabilitation work should take this into consideration and redesign the rehabilitation package.

The officials said the demand for more houses had come from submerged villages in the Bennethora Major Irrigation Project, including Ankalga, Herur, Yekkanchi, Harkanchi, Tondakal, Sirgapur, Nagur and Kurikota.

The Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Ltd. was revising the estimate of the rehabilitation package, they said.
