Letters to the Editor
This refers to the editorial "A salutary approach" (Aug. 29). Terrorism has long been used globally as a convenient stick to beat Muslims with. The coinage of the term `Islamophobia' is a case in point. In this context, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's remarks, made with a view to allaying the apprehensions of the Muslim community in India over being tarred with the brush of terrorism, were welcome. Terrorism is not a product of religion. There are many social evils such as poverty, unemployment, youth unrest, and the like that contribute to terrorism. The Hindu deserves praise for looking at the issue from a wider perspective.
A.K. Muneer Hudawi,
* * * It is a fact that the media have been unfairly associating Islam and Muslims with almost every terrorism-related incident that takes place in the country, particularly Kashmir. This biased attitude towards Islam must change. As rightly pointed out by the Prime Minister, a terrorist has no caste, religion, and language. The media must attribute acts of terrorism to the organisation committing them and not to a religion.
A. Faizur Rahman,
