TRADITIONAL START: Aravind Jannu, Commissioner for Sericulture Development, inaugurating the workshop in Hubli on Tuesday.
HUBLI: Aravind Jannu, Commissioner for Sericulture Development and Director of Sericulture, has called upon farmers to come forward to adopt new technologies in sericulture for better yield. He was speaking after inaugurating a workshop on "Experience-sharing in rain-fed sericulture" organised by Bharatiya Agro Industries Foundation (BAIF) Institute for Rural Development in association with Swiss Development Centre (SDC), Sericulture Programme Unit (SPU) and the Department of Sericulture here on Tuesday. He said new technology available now would not only reduce manual work, expenditure and loss percentage but also increase yield. Earlier, he elaborated on the changes that had taken place in the field of sericulture. Methods developed by non-governmental organisations had reduced requirement of water and experiments had shown that through innovative methods yield could be increased, he said. Mr. Jannu elaborated on the various schemes and subsidies available to farmers involved in sericulture. He said provisions had been made under the new scheme of the Government called "Reshme Varadaana" to provide financial assistance to farmers. Under the scheme, the farmers who want to take up sericulture would be given financial assistance, he added. He said officials of the department who were participating in the workshop would chalk out programmes to take cost effective models developed by the BAIF Institute for Rural Developmentto farmers who had taken up sericulture in rain-fed areas. Ayyan Reddy, Additional Director of Department of Sericulture, said the notion that sericulture would be successful only in irrigated lands had been proved false . G.N.S.
