KOZHIKODE: The State Pollution Control Board (PCB) has said that it is yet to receive from Kozhikode Medical College authorities a report on pollution control facilities available at the college. Replying to an inquiry by K. Suresh Kumar of Nechivayal House under the Right to Information Act, the environmental engineer of the PCB said a letter was sent to the college authorities on April 2, 2003, in response to one from them seeking consent under the Pollution Act for its functioning. Since the college authorities did not submit the report on the pollution control facilities available at the college, consent was not given. The environmental engineer has also informed Mr. Suresh Kumar that the college authorities did not seek the PCB's consent to establish a supespecialty hospital which is being readied for inauguration. People living in the vicinity of the college who have been protesting against pollution from the water discharged from the hospital have been quick to highlight the information given by the PCB to support their claim that quick and effective steps are needed to redress their grievances. The Kozhikode Medical College Parisara Malineekarana Nirmarjana Samiti said it was illegal for the hospital to function without proper licence from the PCB. Its secretary, Sudhakaran Nambeesan, said on Tuesday they were hopeful of the college authorities taking action to protect them from the pollution which had become a major health hazard.
