`Offices will be blown up'

Special Correspondent

Letter received by press club

KOZHIKODE: A handwritten letter, warning that Government offices responsible for maintaining essential services will be blown up if these do not function more efficiently was received by post at the Kozhikode Press Club on Tuesday. The letter, purportedly by an organisation called NPS, sets a timeframe of three months for improving the efficiency of these offices. The letter has been handed over to the police.

The letter says NPS is the short form of the National Democratic Front, the People's Democratic Party and the Students Islamic Movement of India, and describes it "as an extremist organisation that wants to be of service to the people." The Government departments responsible for distributing water and electricity and proper maintenance of hospitals and roads are not functioning efficiently, the letters says.

It warns that these offices will be targeted for explosions if these institutions are not fine-tuned by the Government to function efficiently round the clock within three months. Inefficient employees should be transferred out and people-friendly officials posted there. These should put up posters announcing their commitment to serve the people.

The letter says the outfit was responsible for the recent explosions in the city, which, it claims, were "sample explosions and harmless and were not meant to cause injury to anyone."

It says the NPS has in its possession more bombs, which are beyond the reach of the police, and warns that Malappuram is the next target.

A similar letter has been seized by the police earlier. A letter recovered along with gelignite sticks from the KSRTC station in the city a few months ago had criticised lack of facilities in hospitals.

Another letter in the same vein recovered recently had condemned the increase in admission fee to a cinema hall in the city. The police have not been able to trace the source of these letters so far.
